- In response to complaints alleging that Faxon St. Luke's (a hospital in Utica, NY) failed to provide adequate interpretation and translation services to LEP patients, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) commenced an investigation into the hospital's procedures and practices with LEP patients. The hospital entered an agreement with the OAG to appoint a Language Assistance Coordinator and implement other activities for LEP patients.
- In July 2005, the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council passed the Blackfeet Tobacco Free Act, which states that all public places will be smoke-free and spit-tobacco-free on the Blackfeet Reservation. The tribe passed the Blackfeet Tobacco Free Act to recognize the harmful effects of tobacco and to protect public health. The law still recognizes the traditional aspect of tobacco use. The passage of the Tobacco-Free Act is part of many tribal health initiatives to address commercial tobacco health related diseases and deaths on the reservation.
- Approximately 17% of the students in the Tucson Unified School District are limited English proficient. Advocates and members of the National Limited English Profiency Advocacy Taks Force filed a complaint agains the TUSD, alleging that the district was discriminating against LEP students and parents by not providing interpretation or translation services. The TUSD signed formal agreements with the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights ensuring that all TUSD programs would be acccesible to persons with limited English skills.Available online at: http://www.leptaskforce.org/Documents/HHC%20Agreement.pdf.
